Student Housing Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, Georgia
A contractor led design/build project to design and build a 147,000 square foot dormitory facility on the historic campus of this historically black college (HBC) was completed in time within a very tight schedule driven by the initial use.
The 4 storey building houses 470 students in either four / five / or six bedroom suites. Each suite features a common living room, kitchenette and bathrooms shared by two bedrooms each. The plan is in the form of a ‘C’ which allowed the creation of a secure internal courtyard that is landscaped with furniture and walking paths for the occupants.
The building’s first occupants were foreign dignitaries assigned as residents during the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta. The fully bricked building was treated with horizontal banding, reveals and composed in a manner to complement the neighboring dormitory building in material, coloring and detailing. It also quite successfully blends with the adjacent residential community of single family homes to the south.
