Dunwoody MARTA Station
Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA)
Atlanta, Georgia
At the time of construction, this aerial station was the interim terminus station on Atlanta’s north line. It serves light rail, buses, automobiles and pedestrians. It shares a site with the Perimeter Mall regional shopping center. Through an art design competition, artist Will Roy McDaniel was selected to design a site specific chandelier. He designed a massive glass composition of custom fabricated glass crystals that were adhered to the large picture window overlooking the shopping mall. Penetrating light rays reflects off of and refracts through the many cut pieces of glass creating dazzle and sparkle throughout the upper concourse level.
The facility layout includes a MARTA police precinct and a 600 car parking structure for the convenience of the rider ship. An atrium connection between the parking garage and station provides the pedestrian connection to the two lower levels of the station.
The open air platform level is protected with a steel framed canopy that is capped with a standing seam roof. The big idea was to capture the sense of historic rail stations of western Europe.
