Terminal Redevelement PhaseI - The Atrium
Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport
Atlanta, Georgia
The Atrium is the “Heart” of the Airport and the Central Passenger Terminal Complex (CPTC). It offers travelers, employees and visitors various amenities previously not available in the Main Terminal. The Atrium features a stainless steel & glass back-lit clock tower as the visual focal landmark within the 4 storey space. The Clock Tower is 35 feet tall and is placed off center under a glass skylight that is 65 feet in diameter. The circular form of the upper level balcony edges juxtaposed against the square ceiling mass creates openings of additional glazing emitting diffused light which is in contrast to the direct sun and shadow effects of the central and column cap skylights.
The importance of the newly introduced terrazzo floor, columns, glass and stainless steel were intended to be the standards for future refurbishment and projects not only in the Terminal, but throughout all of the airports’ concourses. This palate of versatile and durable materials has indeed proven successful and is the forerunner of the universal use of these materials and aesthetics as projected. Of the amenities on the main level is a welcoming environment for relaxation with furniture, plants, banking, food, concessions and a non-denominational chapel. The upper three levels include a restaurant, the airports’ executive conference suite, Department of Aviation Executive (DOA) offices, USO offices and leasable space. The Atrium is also the center point for the DOA’s Art Exhibit program where rotating displays of art are continually being exhibited within the space.
