North Avenue Apartments Georgia Institute of Technology, Atlanta, Georgia
Two (2) building halves connected at the center with the main entry which creates a ‘C’ shaped courtyard. The 480 bed dormitory and exterior courtyard is on a raised site with views overlooking the campus, soccer fields and the city of Atlanta to the east. The building’s location and footprint is in concert with an adjacent dormitory constructed as part of the areas’ master plan. The west and south facades were conceived as ‘Markers’ along the edge of campus adjacent busy secondary streets identifying the edge of the Georgia Tech campus.
The building has a collegian & classic Georgia Tech campus look. The contemporary quality is enhanced with various tones of red & textured brick that are interwoven into the historically inspired dormitory. Georgia Tech’s first campus dormitories were inspiration for the shapes and forms used on this contemporary facility. The dormitory is arranged in an apartment style configuration where each resident has a private bedroom while each two bedrooms share a common bath area. Depending on make-up, arrangements of two, four or six private room residents share a common kitchen and living room areas.
The facilities first occupants were 960 athletes in residence for the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games in Atlanta.
