Southeast Natatorium Recreation Center City of Atlanta - Bureau of Parks and Recreation Atlanta, Georgia
The 86,000 square foot community facility provides many outlets for the district. The lower of the two level facility features a full size gymnasium, 25 yard swimming pool with 8 lanes, a children’s pool and locker rooms for both the gymnasium and pool areas. It contains physical fitness rooms for weight training, dance and aerobics. The upper level contains classrooms, arts and crafts rooms and a large multi-purpose room with dividable partitions accommodating various size groups and functions including a myriad of community programs, wedding receptions, etc. A 350 foot long sky-lit corridor connects the upper seating levels of the gym & pool with theses space and the main entry. Central control is centered at the reception/office control point that is carefully positioned with commanding views to all major sections to both levels of the facility from its single position.
It is located on a densely wooded site with severe topography changes that accommodated the walking trail and play yard. It also allowed a natural buffering habitat from the adjacent single family and multi-family housing on both sides and rear of the facility. The City’s 18 hole golf course Browns Mill is across the street from the main entry. The golf course provided inspiration for the site specific artwork commissioned by our team on the interior of the building.
