Centennial Olympic Park Georgia World Congress Center Atlanta, Georgia
This 21 acre site, formerly an abandoned inner city warehouse district became the centerpiece of the 1996 Centennial Olympic Games featuring exhibits, entertainment as the only ‘free’ venue of “The Games”, it hosted millions from all over the world. A lasting legacy is the Olympic rings interactive Fountain Plaza, amphitheater, visitor’s center, park pavilions, maintenance headquarters facility and the Hermes Markers light towers that demark the 100-meter x 100-meter plaza which honors the 100th anniversary of the Modern Games.
The park has since received millions of people and will continue to play host to numerous music and art festivals, seasonal events, fund raising functions. It remains as the major anchor and back drop to visitors to the central business/entertainment area and is without doubt the catalyst for the surrounding developments including the Georgia Aquarium, World of Coca Cola Museum, neighboring hotels, retail, office complexes and the future Center for Civil and Human Rights. Centennial Olympic Park overlaid with the graphic imagery of “The Quilt of Leaves” is the centerpiece for it all.
