Thomas Kilgore Student Center, Dormitory and Plaza Morehouse College, Atlanta, Georgia
The 37,000 square foot Campus Center is a mixed-use of student and administrative functions. The 100 bedroom dormitory has reading rooms, laundry rooms and all support services. Three seminar|meeting rooms and four guest quarter apartments are included as part of guest services. Student activity and academic offices are located on the second floor above student activities. The 150 seat dining and snack areas are equipped with dividable partitions allowing separation into smaller division for multiple functions. The Presidents’ V.I.P. dining room seats 50 people with a fully glazed window wall opening onto a private courtyard and water fountain. The facility is equipped with a reheat kitchen, a grill and serves meals prepared by the central kitchen which is immediately next door.
Student Union components include areas for passive and active recreational activities. A keynote central interior feature is the suspended spiral stair capped with the interior lighted cupola. The cupola was designed as the visual landmark of the campus and is the Morehouse Beacon by night. It serves to ‘mark’ the plaza that was designed as the base of the building and as the terminus of the central quadrangle campus green.
