Martin Luther King Jr., Historic Site Visitor's Center, National Park Servic, Atlanta, Georgia
This original community center building was converted to display some of the many artifacts from Dr. King’s journey in the stand for civil rights in America and the world. Exhibits were designed as rotating displays for the relatively small center. The building has a large covered entry to protect visitors from the hot Atlanta sun. The entry area provides the location for initial orientation for the historic districts’ docent led walking tours. In addition to the original articles inside, there is an entry/reception hall, a 150 seat auditorium for viewing of film clips of the many landmark activities from the civil rights movement, a retail shop, restrooms and work areas.
The site development included a plaza, water fountain, extensive landscaping, a promenade, site graphics and parking for vehicles and buses. The maintenance facility was designed and constructed to service the National Park and grounds.
