West Campus Parking Facility Spelman College, Atlanta, Georgia
The West Campus Parking Deck was designed as the main entry to the all female Historic Black College University (HBCU) as defined in the master plan. The four storey structure is the visual centerpiece of the new secure perimeter boundary consisting of guard houses, brick masonry posts and wrought iron fencing. It is architecturally compatible with the existing structures with the use of similar bricks, precast concrete sills and cast stone cappings & trim.
The facility holds 500 vehicles, houses the campus security headquarters and is the gateway campus entry point. For these reasons the structure was designed with materials that are articulated to be visually expressed as something more than a typical parking deck. Two (2) colors of brick were selected to complement the color treated precast concrete panels, along with the cast stone trim & accents. The edifice has become a positive welcome-statement to faculty, staff and students and to Spelman’s family of facilities and well maintained grounds.
